Monday Musing, Bringing a touch of Halloween to your table.

The other day I found myself at one of the local big box stores and discovered that once again it’s that time of year where three sessions of holiday items are on the shelves. Now as annoying as I find this in regards to the total commercialization of my favorite holidays. The gamer in me loves it. This is that one time of the year where I am able to get my hands on tons of alternative gaming goodies to use at the table.

So this year my most recent find was my Giant undead frog that I used in my down the drain D&D game session. With his immense size, I gave him a swallow whole attack and a 60-foot reach with his undead tongue attack. led-fairy-string-lights-battery-operated-nbsp-nbsp-warm-white-3_260It was a blast and went over well. This was just one of the items I picked up so far. I also picked up some Halloween lights that I will be making torches and fires with.

I think that I can make a few very nice torch stands with these. Or some other things. Now it is not just about finding cool deals for me. Granted it is very nice to find anything I can implement well at the table for cheap. For me, it is times like this that I can head to the store and let my creative juices flow.

Over the years I have found some excellent things that I use to this day, here are pics of just a few.

A fine example of an old setup that takes advantage of much of these wonderful sessional purchases I have found from trips to the store like this. In this amazing Dwarven Forge setup, I am also using. Trees that I had picked up in an after Christmas sale for a quarter. As well as the cool skeletal torches. I also added Tealights Halloween webbing for fog as well as my sweet Rise all Ye Dead statue I had found on sale at the local Michaels crafts. 2013-01-08 11.49.25

So am I the only one that does this ? Or do you love this time of year as a GM for the same reason as I do?  Or maybe I have inspired you to make a trip to the store? Let me know as I love to hear your input about any great finds you may have come across as well!

Jack-o’-Lantern

It’s interesting to note that when you do a little looking you come to learn a few cool and creepy facts about Jack o lanterns. First off.. they were the original considered to be the will-o’-the-wisp. So even though they came to represent the chasing off of evil spirits.. They were in the beginning the lights that lead you off to die in the swamps.

So this week were going to talk about one of my more recent favorite monsters to pull out at least once a year in some variation at the table. Jack-o’-Lanterns or Pumpkin heads in all shapes and forms ! It is that time of year and man have I found some scary ways to use Jack-o-lanterns in many different ways to great effect.  Here are a few fun ones I have thrown down over the years. Feel free to steal any of these and bring the Terror to your players !

I will start off with the kid’s Track game I ran a few years back at the local Green Dragon’s Non-Con all night game Night. They are our FLGS in the area and I decided for the early crowd I was going to run a kids game the parents and the early Trick Or Treat crowd. It was a great hit as with each hit of the monsters I passed out candies to the kids. They took on Taffy snakes a Candy Corn Golem. And I also had Jumping  Jack o lanterns attack the players ! The kids loved it as they entered the pumpkin patch and they were assaulted by bouncing pumpkins with Gnashing teeth..
I made them from Skulpy and gave them a bit of a bake and Done !

Then came the adult game. People going missing during harvest session. Where are they going… Strange noises coming form the old grave yard. Trees feeding on the blood of the living and sprouting strange pumpkin like pods. That rise up out of the ground and attack when the party gets close ! Pumpkin Golem ! Twisted but fun.

And then inspired by my friends over at Pirate Press and their Savage Worlds Game. Battle for OZ.  ZOMBIE PUMPKINS !! HELL YES ! This was one that I got to play in as much as I am looking to find a way of squeezing it in on my players one day.. Yeah Cats out of the bag now guys sorry.

Oh yes.. this will happen. Humans planted in the ground and Jack-o-lantern placed over their heads. The vines and such then wrap around the body and make a cool ass zombie!  Oh Boy ! the fun I will have when i get to run this one !

A Plague of Goblins upon thee !

This Side Trek is sent out to you with the Holiday in mind (a complete ripoff made with love).

Your party finds themselves in the sleepy town of King’s Falls. The first snows have fallen and the impending threat of a blizzard has snowed the players in until the weather lets up.

As this is going on the goblin shaman in the hills to the east of town has prepared his tribe for a raid on the King’s Falls that night.  A few days before as his tribe was gathering water at the nearby river the shaman saw a sign from the gods. The water shimmered and contained hues of the rainbow. He gathered as much of the liquid as he could and returned to tell his tribe of the gift from the gods. The shaman prepares his warriors a powerful potion from the liquids he gathered at the river and he pours in the Grog bowl the warriors drink from before the coming raid on the town of King’s Falls.

That sundown as the snow falls and the wind begins to howl, a group of goblins descend on the town in a frenzy. Something went wrong with this potions intended effect. Instead of a supernatural vigor and the frenzy. The goblins have all gone raving mad! They drop their weapons and charge into the city. Attacking anyone and everyone they can. As they bite and claw, the bodies warp and twist and become shrunken twisted  “Goblin Men” crazed zombie goblins themselves !

These goblins and their new allies continue to spread their plague from house to house converting more and more of the townsfolk as they go. Chaos ensues and the only chance to save the town rests in the party’s hands.

The town wizard Ginmo is also an alchemist and feels that with a few items the town can be saved. He knows this because he recently threw out a large batch of contaminated potions. He had been working on potions of Reduce person, Touch of Idiocy, hideous laughter and Alter Self. When asked why on earth he would be making these potions he explains he has been experimenting with the idea of combat splash potions similar to alchemist bombs. The project proved a failure and he threw the wasted potions out. When asked where, he poured them into the river of course.

First he needs a live sample of one of the infected. Second he needs to either have his lab brought to him or he needs to be escorted to his lab. Shortly after they get Ginmo to the lab, he gives them a list of items needed for a ritual of dispelling.  As if all of this is not enough Ginmo tells the adventures they must complete the ritual before sunrise in the center of town. Because when the sun comes up the goblins will flee back to their caves. And he fears the crazed villagers will go with them.

Enjoy Happy Halloween !
