“More Game of Thrones, Less Time Bandits”

A good post. As a DM you have to remember your players are as much a key part of the story as the story you are telling. If you they are not having fun. Your game will quickly become dry up to a dead husk of enjoyment. There is a line as a DM we have to walk carefully. We are not slaves to our players and not everyone can be happy all of the time. The theme of something to love, something to hate and something to fear is a great mix in games.

latestSince 5th edition launched, I have been playing D&D regularly, and loving it. The group consists of my son, a guy I played D&D with back in high school, plus his daughter, and a good friend I met after we both were pretty much done playing D&D back in college. It has been a fantastic experience, and I have been overwhelmingly happy with the way things have gone so far. My players seem to enjoy themselves, too.

I was chatting with the buddy I met in college about the campaign. He ran one session, and did a fantastic job of it. We love discussing ways to make the game better. I know storytelling and interaction are two things he really loves, and I asked him if he felt like the game was meeting his needs in this respect. What he said really threw me for a loop.

D&D 5th Edition – Dungeon Master’s Guide

Ill just give this a quick reblog as I am in the act of sitting down and about to do a quick mini review of the DM screen that I picked up last night . Just seems like a nice fit for today !

It’s finally here….

DD-5th-Releases

First of all:

AAAAARRRGGGHH

Wizard’s original plan was to release the Players Handbook in August, the Monster Manual in September, an adventure module in October, and the Dungeon Master’s Guide in November. They delayed the DMG’s release until December for reasons that were never exactly explained (but I think I can explain later on), but made good use of the delay by using the promise of previews to raise money for charity, with some quite dramatic success. Then when the new release came around, Wizards of the Coast failed to print enough.

Two other core rulebooks saw international release that was perfectly timed, and yet somehow completing the set proved too difficult?

Regulars of Dungeons & Dragons products, you may already have the same mantra as I have, “Love D&D, hate Wizard’s of the Coast.” Perhaps it’d be more accurate to focus that dislike onto Hasbro (the parent…

Beep Boop Beep ! Oh my ! I really have been happy to see that X-wing has had staying power in the minis game realm. I had feared that it would slip quietly into the night. But it is strong as ever. Now if I can only get some time to play it more often !

Since we’re celebrating the release of Marvel’s Star Wars comic this week here at Outright Geekery. With the building excitement for Episode VII, there’s quite a bit to still get excited over between now and this December. This is something that I’m excited to see soon:

Back in August of last year, Fantasy Flight Games announced Wave 6 for the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game, calling it Scum and Villainy. In this wave, the players are given the opportunity to abandon the Rebel Alliance or the Empire to play purely as the criminal organizations, pirates and bounty hunters which inhabit the Star Wars Universe, in this third new faction. This faction has its own ships and upgrades, opening up new builds, styles of play and game tactics.

DMing 101 – Apocalypse Punk

Good blog write up about Apocalypse Punk and some of the variants of the setting that could be great fun at the table. I have recently been thinking back to some of the games I have run over the years and wonder if Rifts could be tweaked and make a great setting for a game like this.
New setting wise there are plenty of options for running games in this style. The Cypher system is just begging to be run like this. FATE would be an easy choice as well. Savage worlds Interface Zero 2.0 would put tons of tools in your hands for a game like this.
Just a few thoughts.

Let the record show that I am not entirely happy with last week’s DMing 101, a rewrite is in order. For now though I continue with the genre’s series with a particular favourite of mine:

Interview – David Brown of Extra-Dimensional Publishing

Great interview with some candid in depth looks at the kickstarter world. And how even a great kick could find issues with distribution even after being a successful project.
Sad news but David has a good number of things we will see him involved with down the road.

I recently had the opportunity to interview, Game Designer and publisher, David Brown. David is very active within the hobby and his company, eXtra-Dimensional Publishing, publishes some very high-quality products. You can see my other posts related Adventures in the East Mark to learn about the high quality of their products. This interview was spurred on by the cancelation of their Adventures in the East Mark (English) line of products. So, without further ado, I present to you….. David Brown

RB. I know I was sad to learn that the relationship between eXtra-Dimensional (XD) Publishing and its Spanish partners regarding Adventures in the East Mark was ended recently. For those that may not have seen your press release, can you summarize the situation?

DB. Basic summary is that while we succeeded at delivering our physical products to our backers we required additional investment to produce more units available for retail…

Star Trek FATE: Starfleet Academy and the Command Structure

Star Trek FATE is a perfect example of the FATE system doing what it does best. In a time when there really is not a good set of rules for a very impressive game genre. FATE flexes its muscles and shows off how much versatility it has.

Burn Everything Gaming's avatarBurn Everything Gaming

If you don’t know where to start, a good place is always the beginning.  The beginning for Star Trek is the Starfleet Academy.  Any non Vulcan or Vulcan/Human character starts the Academy at age 18 (18 skill points) and with a refresh of 3. Vulcans and Vulcan/Humans start the Academy at age 22 (22 skill points) and 5 Refresh.  While most fate games give you free choice as to what skills you can have and where, being in the Academy requires some skills to be at least at +1 (Average):

Minimum requirements to be in Starfleet Academy
These skills are required to be at a minimum of +1:

  • Physique
  • Scholarship
  • Discipline
  • Protocol

There is a link to a blank Cadet Character sheet

The first 2 years of the Academy are used to get players accustomed to the FATE system and understand how different conflicts, both physical and social, are done…

Hiring and followers in Fifth Edition

Since the moment I read the crafting rules for 5E this very topic has been on my mind. Good write up.

Kyle Maxwell's avatarTechnoskald's Forge

Gishi Shozo Sanshi (Annotated Portraits of Loyal Retainers)In my last play session, we noted that the players probably need to hire torchbearers or similar companions. I took a look at the rules in 5e and some other games before deciding what to do, and ended up merging them into a simple system that I hope will work for us.

D&D Fifth Edition

The hiring rules[0] in 5e left me feeling really underwhelmed. And after I compared them with the rules in a number of other games, I felt even more underwhelmed. “Skilled” cost 2 gold pieces per day, and “unskilled” cost 2 silver pieces per day. I’d increase that significantly for NPCs asked to go into harm’s way, like torchbearers in a dungeon. Note that this only means hired workers, not “retainers” or “low-level followers”. In those cases, they get a share of treasure and experience points. They make good replacement characters when a regular player character dies, too.
