Beep Boop Beep ! Oh my ! I really have been happy to see that X-wing has had staying power in the minis game realm. I had feared that it would slip quietly into the night. But it is strong as ever. Now if I can only get some time to play it more often !
Since we’re celebrating the release of Marvel’s Star Wars comic this week here at Outright Geekery. With the building excitement for Episode VII, there’s quite a bit to still get excited over between now and this December. This is something that I’m excited to see soon:

Back in August of last year, Fantasy Flight Games announced Wave 6 for the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game, calling it Scum and Villainy. In this wave, the players are given the opportunity to abandon the Rebel Alliance or the Empire to play purely as the criminal organizations, pirates and bounty hunters which inhabit the Star Wars Universe, in this third new faction. This faction has its own ships and upgrades, opening up new builds, styles of play and game tactics.

DMing 101 – Apocalypse Punk
Good blog write up about Apocalypse Punk and some of the variants of the setting that could be great fun at the table. I have recently been thinking back to some of the games I have run over the years and wonder if Rifts could be tweaked and make a great setting for a game like this.
New setting wise there are plenty of options for running games in this style. The Cypher system is just begging to be run like this. FATE would be an easy choice as well. Savage worlds Interface Zero 2.0 would put tons of tools in your hands for a game like this.
Just a few thoughts.
Let the record show that I am not entirely happy with last week’s DMing 101, a rewrite is in order. For now though I continue with the genre’s series with a particular favourite of mine:

Great interview with some candid in depth looks at the kickstarter world. And how even a great kick could find issues with distribution even after being a successful project.
Sad news but David has a good number of things we will see him involved with down the road.

Star Trek FATE: Starfleet Academy and the Command Structure
Star Trek FATE is a perfect example of the FATE system doing what it does best. In a time when there really is not a good set of rules for a very impressive game genre. FATE flexes its muscles and shows off how much versatility it has.
If you don’t know where to start, a good place is always the beginning. The beginning for Star Trek is the Starfleet Academy. Any non Vulcan or Vulcan/Human character starts the Academy at age 18 (18 skill points) and with a refresh of 3. Vulcans and Vulcan/Humans start the Academy at age 22 (22 skill points) and 5 Refresh. While most fate games give you free choice as to what skills you can have and where, being in the Academy requires some skills to be at least at +1 (Average):
Minimum requirements to be in Starfleet Academy
These skills are required to be at a minimum of +1:
- Physique
- Scholarship
- Discipline
- Protocol

Hiring and followers in Fifth Edition
Since the moment I read the crafting rules for 5E this very topic has been on my mind. Good write up.
In my last play session, we noted that the players probably need to hire torchbearers or similar companions. I took a look at the rules in 5e and some other games before deciding what to do, and ended up merging them into a simple system that I hope will work for us.
D&D Fifth Edition
The hiring rules[0] in 5e left me feeling really underwhelmed. And after I compared them with the rules in a number of other games, I felt even more underwhelmed. “Skilled” cost 2 gold pieces per day, and “unskilled” cost 2 silver pieces per day. I’d increase that significantly for NPCs asked to go into harm’s way, like torchbearers in a dungeon. Note that this only means hired workers, not “retainers” or “low-level followers”. In those cases, they get a share of treasure and experience points. They make good replacement characters when a regular player character dies, too.
