Monday Musing on Tuesday #RPGaDay Everywhere? Is it good bad or too much?

maxresdefault (4)

So here we are half way through the #RPGaDay2016. I decided today this would be a good muse. As I look over the questions so far I noticed my thoughts on the entire endeavor were mixed. Three years ago I took part in the first of the #RPGaDay blogging marathon and,  I loved it ! It was new and even then a ton of people participated in the event. The questions were decent and it flooded my blog with a ton of blog posts. I gained many new viewers and as well as many followers from taking part in it.

Going into year two I was excited but after 30 days of blogging, I was happy to see it go away for another year. I try my best not to ever phone in any of my responses. But 31 short blogs in a month on top of regular blogging is a hefty workload. I wrapped up year two drained. I was one of the vocal people that begged, please give out the questions a few weeks earlier next time to lighten our personal work loads. Thankfully they heard the comments and about 2 weeks before the 1st they revealed the questions for this year. This year’s questions are much deeper and require a lot more thought than in years past. I like that.

So what are my though’s overall this year ? Mixed, Some of these questions have been excellent, some not so amazing. That said you can not make everyone happy all of the time so if I like at least half of them I would say you have done a damn good job with the selection for the year. So I will declare this years questions a good set at least personally.

Yeah, I am going to stir the pot a bit. I find myself with a growing complaint/Gripe/concern. In the first year, a few bloggers and Vloggers and fans took to the internet and took part. In year two it became somewhat of a slow moving avalanche. More and more as the days went by people joined in the fun.

This year… nothing short of a terrifying amount of people are doing #RPGaDay2016. I see it everywhere. I wonder how do I cut through the noise ? Is it worth it to keep doing these questions ? I weigh the burnout factor of the workload vs the determination of trudging through. I exaggerate in some regards, yet not in others. I welcome the tidal wave of responses and input from the community. At the same time, I fear a ton of very good blogs responses will have been lost in this ocean of Hashtags. I also wonder if my very own followers might be growing tired of the day after day RPGaDay content growing wall on my blog.

In the end, I have decided to gut it out and keep doing them for now. I do not know if it is the #RPGaday that has generated the conversations or new and awesome followers that are eager to share their thoughts. But one goal I have always wanted to reach in my blog is my audience interaction. I have had several replays on more than one day of This years #RPGaDay content and I am thrilled by that. Here is hoping it continues.

Are good posts being lost in the mix ? Maybe, I can’t honestly be sure. What I can tell you is that I spiked several hundred views the first week. Also my second week my total views were noticeably lower than average as well. So who knows ?

So, I will end on a question. Do you think the concern is valid ? That the #RPGaDay hurts the blog more than helps ? Or do you enjoy the questions that are posed and interested in replies I have on the topics ?

UPDATE: I wanted to also wanted to point out the fact that years later some of my #RPGaDay topics still get consistant hits each month! That is impressive!

#RPGaDay2015 Day 30 Favorite RPG playing Celebrity Vin Diesel

RPG a day 2015 - Twitter

I know there are many people that would say Wil Wheaton, and  he is a great choice. I on other hand am going to go with Vin Diesel. He has not done as much for RPG’s as Wil but he has championed the role of it does not mater what you look like you can play RPG’s. When you see him talk about the subject he lights up, You can tell what a passion it is for him. And now hes about to do the last witch hunter movie. When your favorite PC you ever played was a Witch hunter. How could would it be to play one in your next movie !

#RPGaDay2015 Day 10 Favorite RPG publisher

Currently my favorite RPG publisher is Monte Cook Games. Overall I love everything about this company. They feel like they have their finger on the pulse of the RPG community and are in regular if not contestant contact with their fans.

As a whole they are all very active in all forms of social media and at least in my opinion do a better job than most much larger companies with their level of communication to their fans. Monte, Shanna and Bruce all have Twitter and are very active with their fans on these platforms.

They take the opinions of their fans to heart and have even rewritten portions of published materials when a small but vocal group of native american’s came forward with feelings of misrepresentation in one of their products. The company throughout the entire ordeal maintained a professional level of composure and even encouraged their fans to be civil in the discussions that followed leading up to the rewrite.

#RPGaDay2015 Day 9 Favorite Media you wish was an RPG

Mine is likely to be the same as many others this year. So much so that it even was put of for an Ennie-award. But honestly It does not even need to be a FATE version of Mass Effect. If you look around the internet enough you will see that I am not the only one that feels this way.

TravellerMassEffectWith a quick search around the internet can find numerous conversions for Mass Effect. Myself I know of Six separate systems with a Mass Effect conversion book . My point being that if you look  hard enough you will find a conversion to of this setting in most any system that you can fit it in.

But why? Because People want to play a Mass Effect RPPG game that’s why! So please Bioware wake up and licence the product with someone!

#RPGaDay2015 Day 7 Favorite Free RPG

FATE takes today’s question and for a good many reasons. Fate Accelerated is totally free and FATE Core is pay what you want. In addition the FATE SRD is elegant and awesome. If you have not looked at this site yet. Do yourself a favor and go take a look at how an awesome SRD should look. Check it out HEREaa8620bc760c3432a043d6d77e1fe23c_large

Not only does Fate do all these things right, With the System Toolkit you can run anything you can think of with the FATE rule. The only drawback of FATE. It’s almost too easy.

#RPGaDay2015 Day 6 Most Recent RPG played

91BUKJv36YL._SY355_So as of the writing of this blog my most recently played RPG would be Dresden Files. For any of you that have not played this game I can not encourage you enough go out and find a game of Dresden!

Beneath the “normal” surface of the world are things and people who most of us don’t want to know about, and will do our best to forget about if we ever come near them. People won’t see what they don’t want to see.

But that’s most of us. And you’re not most of us

The book is a pure joy to read and you really feel like you are part of the Harry Dresden universe while your reading this book. The book itself is filled with sidebars and notes from Dresden and other characters from the novels. This kicks the game immersion up another notch and makes the book  itself more enjoyable to read. As well as giving  you a feel for the world your playing in. 139271It is little things like this that elevate games to a level far above the rest.

Dresden Files runs off the FATE system and it really shows how a well done setting for Fate makes FATE games Shine!  If you are unsure of how good the FATE systems might be or have never played a game with the FATE rules, give this book a long look.

One of the best parts of Dresden Files is that the FATE system complements the setting well. Non combat characters can still be effective in dangerous situations as long as they play smart. This alone is one of my favorite things about FATE. How many of you have played Dresden Files? Do you like it as much as I do or not ? Feel free to comment below.

#RPGaDay2015 Day 5 Most Recent RPG Purchase

RPG a day 2015 - Twitter

In the age of steam, coal is king.

My most recent RPG purchase is a Pathfinder Campaign Setting Pure Steam. I am a big fan of Steampunk settings. I have yet to find my go too Steampunk system and this one may just be the contender that I have been looking for. I have not read much of this book at the time of the blog. Heck I have not done much more than flipping through the book and giving it a glance. But every bit that I did give more than a passing glance I found to be very well done.

A few things in Pure Steam that caught my eye.

  • The Chaplain, a class able to heal, buff, harm, and bewilder allies and foes through personality and science. She adventures to further the goals of her association, each of which grants unique powers and options.
  • The Gearhead, a class able to create wondrous effects through the use of technology. The Gearhead is able to construct useful and dangerous gear on the fly with a draft book full of schematics.
  • Unique class archetypes such as the Blockade Runner, Fumigant, Grease Rat, or Ructioneer.

The chaplain looks awesome from what I have looked at. As is the Gearhead. Of the class archetypes the Fumigant is the one that I spent the most time reading and it was very cool as well. I will be reviewing this book soon on my blog but between now That is about all that I can say of the game.

If you are already excited and can’t wait for my review you can pick it up at DTRPG HERE
