Hiring and followers in Fifth Edition

Since the moment I read the crafting rules for 5E this very topic has been on my mind. Good write up.

Gishi Shozo Sanshi (Annotated Portraits of Loyal Retainers)In my last play session, we noted that the players probably need to hire torchbearers or similar companions. I took a look at the rules in 5e and some other games before deciding what to do, and ended up merging them into a simple system that I hope will work for us.

D&D Fifth Edition

The hiring rules[0] in 5e left me feeling really underwhelmed. And after I compared them with the rules in a number of other games, I felt even more underwhelmed. “Skilled” cost 2 gold pieces per day, and “unskilled” cost 2 silver pieces per day. I’d increase that significantly for NPCs asked to go into harm’s way, like torchbearers in a dungeon. Note that this only means hired workers, not “retainers” or “low-level followers”. In those cases, they get a share of treasure and experience points. They make good replacement characters when a regular player character dies, too.

RPG State of the Blog.

It's been one heck of a year. I busted the 100 post barrier and never looked back. As of this post I will have hit my stride at 150 posts. Even with the move staring me in the face, I found time to blog more than I expected. I guess when you love something you… Continue reading RPG State of the Blog.

SLEIGHT OF HAND

“Sleight of Hand” is one of the 18 skills in 5th edition D&D. It is a Dexterity skill. This is because “Sleight of Hand” also known as Prestidigitation or Legerdemain, is the set of techniques used to manipulate objects secretly. The employment of purely manual dexterity without mechanical apparatus may be distinguished as “Sleight of Hand.”

There are eight principles to the study of “Sleight of Hand.” These include:

  1. Palm – To hold an object in an apparently empty hand.
  2. Switch – To secretly exchange one object for another.
  3. Ditch – To secretly dispose of an unneeded object.
  4. Steal – To secretly obtain a needed object.
  5. Load – To secretly move an object to where it is needed.
  6. Simulation – To give the impression that something has happened that has not.
  7. Misdirection – To lead attention away from a secret move.
  8. Display – To demonstrate an object…

Adventures in the East Mark is No More

Sad news from X-D. I have had the pleasure of private convesations back and forth in the past and I was looking forward to more from them in 2015. Sorry to see you guys go!
Thank you Modoc for a great write up. I was just setting up to write one about this very topic. But you hit all the marks here.

Last night the American publisher of Adventures in the East Mark, X-D Publishing, released a Kickstarter statement that they were no long a Licensee. This is a bummer right at the end of the year, but what can you do, right? Here’s the full statement.

This is the update that I’ve not wanted to write but I want to be open with you, our fantastic backers.

Due to a number of factors, the relationship with X-D and our Spanish partners will not continue. I am sad about that, especially as that means that the East Mark product line will not continue in the US, at least in the near future and under the eXtra-Dimensional banner. This does also include the Walkure license too, but fortunately this severing of our licence may mean you see that product in the US sooner than if it had remained with us.

So what happened?…

Making the place look nice for the new year.

Well I found myself with some time before the year came to a close. So I cleaned up the place a bit. I have been meaning to put in some RSS feeds for a long time and I managed to get that done as well before the year came to a close. I added a… Continue reading Making the place look nice for the new year.
