Product Spotlight: HG3D – Cellar Door – Raghaven Collection

Continuing the spotlight feature some cool and simple 3d Prints that are out there to be found today I picked Hobgoblin 3D Cellar Door. Hobgoblin-3D  has a huge collection of 3D prints that you can pick up at DTRPG. I like the cellar door as it is a simple print and surprisingly out of the many entrances that I have in my collection of doors. This happens to be one that I have never seen.

Product Spotlight: Stout Hearted Heros “The Theif”

Publisher: Rocket Pig Games Inc.
Stout Hearted Heros: Thief
Price: $3.99
DTRPG Link: The Thief

Last week I featured the barbarian and I was pretty happy with this print. Today I wanted to spotlight the Thief. I like the style of these models even if my players will likely never use them. They remind me of Super Dungeon Explorer. They print well but my only criticism is that they don’t come with supports. and you have to generate them yourself. Not a big deal really. Just something I wish that the product had two files one with and one without.

Rocket Pig Games is a leader in the 3D industry. We specialize in creating 3D printable files that work on your home or public 3D printer. If you are looking for unique and flawless 3D printable files to create miniatures, modular terrain, and props then look no further! We have yearly Kickstarters! Follow our progress on our website or on Facebook.

This model does not come with supports. You will need to generate them with the software of your choice or use Autodesk Meshmixer which is free.

These are the settings we have used to get perfect prints on our printers. Printers vary as do different types of filaments and how prints behave in different types of weather! You will need to get comfortable with your printer and how it prints in the hot, cold, and humidity. Regardless of the printer you choose, I recommend keeping your room cool and dry. I also, highly recommend using Hatchbox PLA. It may cost a bit more but it’s 100% worth it. Seriously.

Here’s what is working really well with Hatchbox PLA:

TEMP: 195 (40-55 for bed depending on season)|
SPEED: 60 mms
RETRACTION DISTANCE: 0.80
RETRACTION SOPEED: 30
INFILL: 15% (for tiles)
TOP SOLID LAYERS: 7
BOTTOM SOLID LAYERS: 4

Uprising: The Dystopian Universe, FATE RPG Now On Kickstarter

eea974d0e72df3b48f1dfe3e7ee186ff_original

Uprising is the roleplaying game based on the hit Dystopian Universe (DU) games from Indie Boards & Cards, including The Resistance, Coup, and One Night Revolution. Like the other DU games, Uprising is about cunning spies and government agents, loyalty and betrayal, propaganda, unrest, and violent revolution. Unlike the other games, it’s a roleplaying game or RPG. Uprising uses a modified version of the Fate Core rules. You’ll step into the identities behind the cards—or make your own—and foment rebellion, betray close friends, aid enemies, and hopefully survive the dark and gritty streets of Paris Nouveau.

I’m a Fate fanatic! What’s in it for me?

For gamers familiar with Fate, Uprising offers some new and exciting mechanics—not to mention that compelling cyberpunk setting. Inside, you’ll find the following new elements:

  • Secrets – Fate Core is built around camaraderie and teamwork, but at its core, the Dystopian Universe is full of backstabbing and deceit. Uprising provides a mechanical system for in-character secrets that will keep everyone at the table guessing.
  • Prep scenes – Do more with your downtime than just refreshing your Fate pool with the new prep scene rules. Request favors requisition equipment, and create advantages to use later.
  • New action rules – Instead of skills or approaches, Uprising uses means—Fight, Manipulate, Maneuver, and Observe. Adjust the outcome depending on whether the means fit the end goal.
  • Advancement system – Instead of milestones, character-specific goals lead to character growth—and sometimes put the characters at odds with each other.

Earlier today I backed Evil Hats newest Kickstarter Uprising: The Dystopian Universe. Why, well first off because I am a fan of the setting that is Coup, Rebellion, One Night Revolution and The Resistance. As well as games that have a similar feel like Netrunner.

That alone was enough to get my attention but what put me from curious to a solid sell was the early access to the PDF copy of the game. When I downloaded the PDF I was expecting the standard quick start guide to give you a better taste of the setting. Instead what they give you is a 300+ Page fully fleshed out playable RPG ready to go NOW.

Hats off Evil Hat you got me to upgrade my pledge without a second thought.

Mondays Muse, Run What You Love.

Today I am going to talk a little bit about one of the hardest things to do as a Game Master. Run what you love, I know it sounds easy. Yet ask a handful of GM’s and you will likely find that many of them are not running games they love. Often they are running games the group wants to play not what they themselves want to run. It’s an easy trap to fall into with more than a few ways to fall into it.

Most often we are just running the games that the group wants to play and someone needs to be the Game Master, Welcome to the trap.

The group has decided to run a game system that everyone knows rather than one that you as the GM know best. Welcome to the trap.

You are going to have to learn how to run the system some time this is your chance, Welcome to the trap.

The list goes on.

Granted there is a case to be made that there is nothing wrong with any of this. But in reality, if you want to be a game master for years to come head my advice and run the things that you love.

Everyone that runs games has enough to do with juggling game prep, manning the helm during the game and coordinating everything else in between. Why heap on the added weight of motivating yourself to even get into the mindset to run something that you are not enjoying. Because let me tell you if you struggle to find the motivation to run the game for your players. Everything else becomes exponentially more difficult.

So I wrap up my short little muse tonight stressing that if you or your group want you to try your hand at running games or tag you to run a game, Wonderful! Jump at the chance, embrace it and take it on with all that you are because it is one of the most rewarding parts of playing games you can do.

JUST RUN WHAT YOU LOVE and have faith that if you love it, your players will too!

Until next time.

State of the Blog 2018

Well, here we are cutting a swath into the first month of the new year. As the blog moves into its 6th YEAR I for one find myself shocked that I am still doing this, Wow!

A Look Back at 2017

I could say the 2017 overall was rollercoaster ride Although to be completely honest it was more like a ski lift ever upwards to skydive off a cliff at the end for me. It honestly took me a few weeks to process & come to the conclusion on whether or not I felt I had a good 2017 or a bad 2017. And overwhelmingly the answer is yes I had an amazing 2017 with one hiccup that for a little while nearly ruined it for me.

You see the beginning of 2017 I decided that I would take on the opportunity to earn extra cash as a freelance blogger. I thought this would give me time to improve my writing skills and earn some money on the side & in the end it would help this blog. By the end of the year, I saw I had learned a lot working as a freelance blogger. I came to better appreciate deadlines, writing in other styles, valuing my own writing for myself and most of all I like to getting paid for blogging.

So it never occurred to me at first until begin working on other peoples pages and being paid for working as a Ghostwriter. You have to understand before 2017 ended I have never been paid to write Runkle Plays Games. Granted I have received compensation in samples of products & PDFs as well as a few physical books for my blog. But never had I been paid to write my own content on my own blog.

Freelance blogging was going wonderfully and I had set up a testimonial page to get feedback from the writers of projects I had reviewed over the years. I began to think about how nice would it be if I could just work on my page full time instead of spending my time writing for other blogs.

So I turned to Patreon?

Now, this is where my misstep of the year in my opinion occurred. I had mistaken high blog view numbers combined with tremendous praise from Creator’s Testimonials along with making an income as a ghostwriter. Into a false assumption that this would naturally convert into Patrons.

When it didn’t I was crushed, and honestly, on reflection it was silly. My blog did not grow overnight. Nor did creator base of reviews so why should taking a huge step forward and asking followers of my blog to subscribe have been any different? The icing on that Patreon cake for me happened within a week of me starting my Patreon, The dreaded price changes and the chaos that followed.

Yet while all this crazy was going on A project that I had been planning for most of the year finally came about. I had seen Kickstarter projects for scented candles themed towards gamers but they never satisfied me. What I wanted to see what was 20-sided die candle but more than that I wanted them to be treasure candles. I sorted my molds and got a pile of metal D20s and started making candles. I honestly had no real Idea if anyone would want them. But I thought they would, it turned out I was right. When I went to Mace 2017 it was my first test. We packed about a dozen Crit Candles (The name we gave them) for the convention and hoped to maybe sell a few. In the end, we came home with no candles I was absolutely floored!

With Christmas right around the corner like we got to make as many candles as I could, so at my sold at my FLGS, others on Etsy and a few by word of mouth and Facebook. It was nothing short of amazing. Honestly thought that once Christmas was over candle sales would drop off or slow down, Admittedly they have slowed down a little bit but to my surprise, they continue to sell at a steady clip.

So Here We Are 2018

So here we are looking forward to a new year, so much has changed in the only the last few weeks. Only a few weeks ago I was frustrated that the Patron was not going to be able to provide extra income so I could slow down my ghostwriting and devote more time to my blog. The birth of Crit Candles comes and allows me to do just that!

Over the next few weeks, things will still be slow this year as I am focused on my sons SSI case as we are about to go before a judge to determine if he will finally be granted disability. It has been a long road and we can finally see the end of the road.

After that, I have EVERYTHING Fragged to bring to review for all of you! That’s right Wade Dryer has sent us all of his new Fragged books for review and I can’t wait to share my thoughts with you about them!

Additionally, with the revisit of one of my old cipher system games in my RPG group, I am happy to say that I will be updating all my old Cypher Shadowrun blogs. Looking back on them and discussing the old continent with my friend Nick Chapman we have seen errors as well as simplifications to the some of our ideas that will be a great update to a set of blogs that see regular viewing on my page.

Look forward to more blogs along the lines of Homebrew content and crafting including 3D printing projects as I am taking a hardcore look at investing in a resin 3d Printer. More on that to come soon!

I will keep the Patreon going but I have chosen not to rely on it. If you chose to support me through it you have my deepest thanks. As always thank you for your support, it’s been an amazing experience and we are not going to stop anytime soon.

2018 is going to be a good year!
